Urban Planning – What You Should Know

Urban planning focuses on the design and regulation of the use of space that focus on the physical form, economic function and social impact of the urban environment and on the location of different activities within it. Urban planning is more than physical planning, the effect of urban planning is felt in every sectors.

Urban planning is a technical and political process concerned with the development and design of land use in an urban environment which includes all infrastructure. The primary concern of every planner is public welfare, any planning that neglects the welfare of the public is a work in futility. Urban planning considers efficiency, sanitation protection and use of the environment and its effect on social and economic activities. Urban planning is best done when the public are involved in the planning, this is known as public participation.

In simpler terms, urban planning is the art and science of designing and regulating land use and putting things like building, roads, parks, hospital and other infrastructure in the right place with the aid of the people in the community.

Urban planning is basically involve in-goal setting, data collection and analysis, forecasting, design, strategic thinking and public consultation.

Geographic Information System has become increasingly popular among urban planner, one of the uses in urban planning is to map the existing urban system and to project the consequences of changes.

Urban planning is also geared towards sustainability which refers to development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.

An urban planner should also leverage technology in the design of towns and city which brings me to smart cities. A smart city is an urban area that uses different types of electronic data collection sensors to supply information which is used to mange assets and resources efficiently. Smart cities are the future of our cities, as planners we must equip ourselves with the right tool to birth smart cities in our respective communities.
